What a generator cord does

A generator power cord carries a generator's output to an inlet box or a single appliance. Its connector types and amperage must match both ends.

120 V6,000 W4,800 W
240 V12,000 W9,600 W
Wattstanding calculationWattstanding calculation — watts = amps × volts. Electrical practice commonly limits continuous loads to about 80% of a circuit's rating; your electrician applies the code that governs your home.

Generators in our catalog with a matching listed outlet

A matching outlet is necessary but not sufficient: the generator's watts, the inlet, the cord and the panel all have to be correct. An electrician confirms the whole chain.

Safety and installation

SafetyNever plug a generator or battery system into a wall outlet to power the house ("backfeeding"): it can send electricity back into the utility lines and injure line workers, and it can start fires. Connecting a generator to a home's wiring is a job for a licensed electrician, with the permit and inspection your local code requires. Wattstanding does not give wiring instructions.
