Generator and transfer switch compatibility matrix

Pick a generator or enter its running watts and outlet type. We show the outlet's limit and list the transfer switches, inlet boxes and cords in our catalog with the same amperage.

Choosing one fills the fields below

What this tool does and does not do

  • It applies watts = amps × volts to the outlet you pick and compares it with the generator's running watts.
  • It lists catalog items rated at the same amperage, as a starting point for a conversation with your electrician.
  • It does not check your panel, your wiring or local code — only a licensed electrician can.
SafetyNever plug a generator into a wall outlet to power a house (backfeeding). It can kill utility workers and start fires. Wattstanding gives no wiring instructions; hire a licensed electrician and follow your local permit and inspection process.

Questions

What is the difference between a transfer switch and an interlock kit?
A transfer switch is a separate box wired to selected circuits. An interlock kit is a mechanical slide on your main panel that prevents the main breaker and the generator breaker from being on together. Both need a licensed electrician.
Is a matching outlet enough?
No. The cord, inlet box, switch, panel and the generator's watts all have to be right, and your electrician decides what is allowed in your jurisdiction.
