About
About Wattstanding
An independent reference for people deciding how to keep a home running when the grid is down.
Backup-power decisions are numerical and consequential. A power station that looks right on paper may not start a well pump; a generator's outlet may not match the transfer switch an electrician is quoting; a battery rated for a day may last a night. Wattstanding exists to answer those questions with numbers, and to say plainly when a number is not available.
What we publish
- Product references built from makers' stores and product pages, and retailers' listings, with every figure labelled by source and date.
- Runtime, recharge, cost-per-kWh and compatibility math calculated the same way for every product, with the formula shown.
- Like-for-like comparisons and best-of lists that state their qualifying rules and ranking criteria.
- Guides and calculators for load sizing, generator and transfer-switch compatibility, solar recharge and fuel runtime.
What we don't do
We don't claim hands-on testing, laboratory measurement, star ratings or product ownership we don't have. We don't give electrical installation instructions: anything that connects to a home's wiring belongs to a licensed electrician. Where a figure is our own calculation, it says so; where a seller's listing is our source, it says so.
Who it's for
Homeowners preparing for hurricanes, winter storms, wildfire shutoffs and grid failures; renters and apartment dwellers who can't use fuel; RV and van owners; and anyone sizing backup power for a refrigerator, sump pump, well pump or work-from-home setup.
