What a manual transfer switch does
A manual transfer switch moves selected household circuits from the utility to a generator with a lever, and keeps the two sources from ever being connected together. It is wired to the main panel by an electrician and fed from the generator through an inlet and a cord.

A matching outlet is necessary but not sufficient: the generator's watts, the inlet, the cord and the panel all have to be correct. An electrician confirms the whole chain.
